This linking feature helps KontactApp stand out from other freelance job search sites, but more on that later. As in other industries, working as a freelance in the Oil and Gas (O&G) sector has its issues, including availability.

As someone with 15 years of O&G experience himself, Rowan knew firsthand that trying to match the company’s project start date with the job seeker’s availability can be incredibly overwhelming.

Some companies still use Excel to track talent

There are a variety of local sites that aim to connect freelancers and businesses, for example Qwork and GoGet. Globally, the concert economy is growing steadily, with the number of concert workers in Malaysia alone at around 4 million.

The industry presents plenty of opportunities for service providers to offer better solutions for hiring gig workers, with even LinkedIn joining the fray with its new product, Marketplaces.

But for freelancers and hiring managers in O&G, the process is a bit more complicated. “The temporary nature of work in the industry (which can last from a few days to 12 months), the specialized skills by type of job and the tendency to work for several operators in several geographical areas with very short notice, create a complex job search ecosystem, ”Rowan explained.

A platform like LinkedIn wasn’t designed with contract labor in mind, he thinks, and you can’t just hire someone within 3 days on the platform. , which happens in O&G.

Whenever a business needs a freelance writer (for some it’s a weekly process), they have to call and email dozens of talent that they know could do the job of. , just trying to find the one that’s available to do it. “Most organized companies try to track freelancers with an Excel spreadsheet, but freelance availability is usually out of date after 7 days,” Rowan added.

Even the costly recruiting fees did not lead to a change

Due to the arduous nature of the process, some oil and gas companies have reportedly resorted to outsourcing this work to recruiting companies.

According to Rowan, the current industry fees charged by recruiting companies are around $ 1,000 per month for a freelance writer. So if a recruiting company provides five freelancers for a month, they will charge a fee of $ 5,000. While the cost is pretty steep, there’s a reason it still doesn’t spur change.

Since O&G has historically been a wealthy industry, recruiting in this industry can be lucrative as many recruiters are willing to pay recruiters dearly to find someone who can do the job.

“With the drop in oil prices over the past few years, every supply cost is now coming under scrutiny. But remember: this is a very old industry, where process and sourcing changes or even the status quo take time and often meet resistance, ”Rowan explained. But for him, the cost of supplying this workforce must change drastically as much as it must become more efficient.

So, on KontactApp, SMBs that hire less than 5 freelancers per year will pay nothing, while active hires will pay a subscription of $ 360 (around RM1525) per year.

Don’t try to be a recruiting agency

One thing Rowan wanted to make clear about KontactApp’s goals was that they did not intend to become a recruiting company, but rather a sourcing platform for freelancers to find companies and vice versa. When a company finds a suitable candidate to hire, all hires will be made disabled the platform.

If you have registered with other job search platforms, the overall registration process for KontactApp has no surprises. What is different, however, is the aforementioned link function.

Once you’ve created a profile, you can generate a link where your contact number, email address, availability period, CV, skillset, etc. can be viewed by anyone who gets your link. .

The great thing about the link is that you can quickly share it with people you know, and it’s a personal page that can be updated as soon as possible with changes posted to your network in real time. The person who receives your link does not need a KontactApp account, as the hiring is supposed to be outside of the site, as mentioned earlier.

Users will just have to be careful not to share this link in public networks if they do not want their personal information to be disseminated so easily.

To help freelancers assess potential jobs, the app will notify them if they’ve been shortlisted or their profiles have been viewed by a company, so they can prepare for a potential phone call. On the employer’s side, he can see the exact availability of each freelancer and when they last updated their availability.

Currently, KontactApp has around 200 companies on the platform and is seeing a 10% week-over-week growth rate of freelancers entering the app.

Rowan shared that they are offering new features every month to further improve the user experience. At the time of our interview, he had explained that by August 2021, they wanted to offer freelancers the ability to create timesheets and invoices on the app, as well as part of the platform allowing companies manage their own staff.

A quick check shows that it doesn’t look like these features have been rolled out yet, but the team is still active in providing incremental updates to the app on Google Play and Apple App Store.
