Meets national needs with chlorphenamine oral solution and Paracetamol tablets 500mg production

Morison Ltd., one of the pioneers of pharmaceutical manufacturing in Sri Lanka since 1959, has announced the start of commercial production at its state-of-the-art WHO and EU GMP compliant production facility in Pitipana, Homagama. Unveiled in late 2020 as the first and largest manufacturing plant for general oral solid and liquid dosage pharmaceuticals in Sri Lanka, the plant marked the start of commercial production by manufacturing and launching its 1st commercial batches of Chlorphenamine Oral Solution and paracetamol 500mg tablets on the market on 26e of May.

Marking a new era in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka, with a commitment to increasing access to high-quality yet affordable medicines, Morison’s LKR 4 billion investment in its new research and of state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing, is the highest investment to date in the local pharmaceutical industry. The facility, the first general oral solid and liquid dosage manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka, built to European Union-Good Manufacturing Practices (EU-GMP) specifications and quality management systems, has a manufacturing capacity of more than 5 billion tablets and 2 million liters. of cash in two shifts, which can cover up to 40% of national demand.

True to its purpose, Morison recently launched the 1st locally manufactured SGLT-2, a new generation of diabetes molecules – Empagliflozin at a cost approximately 50% below prevailing market prices. According to the company, it is also working on a new product pipeline which will include some of the latest therapies primarily in the diabetic, cardiovascular and vitamin segments.

In addition, leveraging Hemas Group’s long-standing relationships, Morison has signed contract manufacturing agreements with a few leading regional pharmaceutical companies, which will be operationalized during the year.

Morison hopes he can bring about a step change in the pharmaceutical industry in Sri Lanka while helping to save some much needed foreign exchange at this stage and possibly start an export business.
