Call for prizes for young Baltic photographers / Article

The winner of the prize will be chosen by an international jury and will have the opportunity to organize a solo exhibition at the ISSP Gallery as part of the program of the Riga Photography Biennale – NEXT 2023 (RPB – NEXT 2023) to be held in May 2023, where the awarding of other winners will also take place. Contest participants will also receive special prizes from the “VV Foundation” and the Lithuanian independent publishing initiative “NoRoutine Books”.

The prize “In search of the latest innovations in photography!” is an award founded by the Riga Photography Biennale – an international contemporary art event focused on the analysis of visual culture and artistic representation. Every two years, the festival organizes the NEXT program which focuses on promising young artists from the Baltic countries, the Nordic countries and Europe who are still at the beginning of their career. The prize for young Baltic artists has been awarded under the RPB – NEXT program since 2016.

“The aim of this prize is to discover and evaluate the creative efforts of young artists who demonstrate the power of the image in their works, offering an original point of view and conceptual depth reflecting our current times. The curators of RPB – NEXT are looking for artist portfolios that stimulate discussion and offer diverse ideas. At the same time, the organizers want to provide a public platform for young artists at the start of their creative journey in photography or a medium associated with it, so that they can present themselves to a wider audience,” the organizers say.

The competition is open to emerging artists and photographers from the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – provided that the work they submit to the competition has been created within the past three years.

In addition to the main prize – an opportunity to hold a personal exhibition at the ISSP Gallery in Riga, the members of the jury will nominate five finalists (including the winner) who will present their work at the launch of the exhibition, and ten finalists who will have the opportunity to participate free of charge in the portfolio review of the NEXT 2023 program for professionals in the sector.
