A worldwide investment of £ 70million is expected to help increase production capacity for customers of 3M’s Business Solutions division in the UK.
The company, which helps customers build brands and transform spaces with complete graphics and signage solutions, will now be able to meet growing demand by tapping additional capacity at the state-of-the-art facility in Hilden, in Germany.
Two new graphic film production lines will be able to deliver an additional five million square meters of film each year, ensuring on-time delivery and growth expectations.
The site is celebrated as an Industry 4.0 flagship factory, integrating state-of-the-art graphics film manufacturing, state-of-the-art energy management systems and world-class quality performance, including web inspection, l ‘fault identification and automatic conversion connections.
Six Sigma Black Belts’ commitment to implement LEAN initiatives has enabled the plant to achieve peak efficiency and meet its productivity goals, including automation and a focus on clean energy which will help the plant reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2022.
With 2,800 square meters of production area, the new building took 353 days to build and strengthens Hilden’s position as the largest 3M production facility in Europe, reducing shipping time to customers served in the UK.

The grand opening was attended by key stakeholders from the 3M Commercial Solutions division, the pioneers behind the development of the new facility, and key dignitaries from the German government, who commemorated the momentous occasion.
3M manufactures graphic films, flexible substrates and inks used to create finished graphics that are consistent, reliable and durable.
The company also runs training programs for installers of all skill levels to help them grow their businesses and build their reputation.
